ORICK, Calif. — A second Redwood National and State Parks visitor center north of Orick has moved to its winter operating calendar. The National Park Service lists Prairie Creek Visitor Center along Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, about 6.5 miles north of Orick, with a seasonal schedule beginning November 2.
When is the visitor center staffed?
For November 2 through March 8, the published winter schedule is Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with closure on Monday and Tuesday. Thanksgiving and Christmas closures are listed separately. This differs from the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center south of Orick, which uses a different pair of closed weekdays.
What is available?
The park identifies exhibits on the Civilian Conservation Corps and redwood ecology, ranger information, educational resources, restrooms, drinking water and nearby trail access. Elk Prairie is another attraction in this part of the park, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Visitors should confirm whether the scenic parkway, individual trails and parking areas are accessible during heavy rain or other seasonal disruptions; opening hours for an information desk do not override road closures.
